Former Glens Falls insurance broker pleads guilty to victimizing 36 families, others

A former Glens Falls insurance broker faces up to four years in prison after pleading guilty to pocketing $9,576 in premiums.

Jill M. Morrill, 43, admitted to victimizing 36 families; her employer, Pro-Vu Best Insurance Co.; and 18 insurance carriers. Under a plea agreement, she will be responsible for making complete restitution. She has already paid $2,000 in restitution to the victims.

Morrill was arrested in July following an investigation by the New York state Insurance Department, Saratoga County District Attorney James Murphy, the state Department of Motor Vehicles and the Saratoga County Sheriff's Department.

The investigation began when Pro-Vu contacted the police. The agency had received complaints from customers who said their auto insurance policies had been cancelled even though they had paid their premiums. In some cases, victims' car registrations and driver's licenses had been suspended because insurance coverage had lapsed. Several customers said they had been handcuffed and arrested for driving without insurance. In other cases, customers, who lived in Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties, complained that their vehicles had been towed and they had received civil sanctions from the DMV for driving without insurance.

As a result of the investigation, the victims' licenses have been cleared, insurance policies have been reinstated and DMV sanctions against the victims have been reversed.
