Wachovia Corp. will provide full pay to employees on military leave throughout their active military service beginning Jan. 1.
Previously, the Charlotte-based company (NYSE:WB) provided full pay for up to 12 months. Under an exception granted in 2003, the company had been extending full pay beyond one year for longer leaves.
Wachovia's action makes the exception permanent.
"Wachovia proudly supports the men and women who are serving our country," says Ken Thompson, chief executive. "We are taking meaningful action by providing continuing pay for our employees and believe this is the right decision for Wachovia to further our commitment of financial support to employees serving our country."
Wachovia has 63 employees on active military duty who are covered under the bank's military-leave policy.
Wachovia is one of the nation's largest diversified financial services companies.
