Court Weighs If Partners Of Gay Workers Can Get Health Insurance

 by AP Associated Press

LANSING (AP) -- The Michigan Supreme Court is weighing whether state universities and governments can provide health insurance to the partners of gay workers.

Lawyers for 21 gay couples and Governor Jennifer Granholm tell the court that a 2004 constitutional amendment approved by voters only prohibits gay marriage, not benefits for same-sex partners.

But Attorney General Mike Cox's office says the measure also bars public employers from recognizing relationships such as domestic partnerships.

Michigan's highest court has a 5-2 Republican majority.

Up to 20 public universities, community colleges, school districts and local governments in Michigan have benefits policies covering at least 375 gay couples.

The court is expected to rule by next summer.
