You insure your home and your car, but what about the most important day of your life? In this Fresh Idea Michelle King shows us whether you should say "I do" to wedding insurance.
When you consider the total cost of a wedding, adding wedding insurance may be the sigh of relief you're looking for.
John and Amanda Turnbull have a great marriage but their wedding was nearly a disaster.
The couple had hoped for a dream wedding in Florida. But their dreams were dashed when they got an unbelievable call from the owner of the banquet hall. They told the couple they had double booked the facility and they would be unable to accommodate their wedding.
Then there were problems with the Hawaii honeymoon"major mudslides!
“Of the entire island, it was right above our hotel. So the mudslides filled our hotel pool,” Amanda said.
The Turnbulls would have preferred to cancel the Hawaii trip but the hotel refused to return the $5,000 they had prepaid. That was in addition to the $2,000 deposit the banquet never returned and another $2,000 to print new invitations.
Amanda said she wishes she had purchased wedding insurance.
“It's a great way to protect your investments,” said Karen Sandau.
Sandau owns a wedding insurance company. She would have insured the Turnbulls for $400. They would have been reimbursed for the $9,000 worth of disasters.
“We cover such things as severe weather,” Sandau said. “We cover for illness to the bride and groom. We do cover for vendors that go out of business say like a dress shop.”
But insurance will not cover you if you have to cancel because a parent becomes ill from a pre-existing medical condition.
“I think if there was insurance, and it didn't exclude every condition you could think of it would make a lot of sense,” said wedding planner, Reva Nathan.
Despite that exclusion, the Turnbulls say they would advise any couple to get wedding insurance.
“Absolutely! That or just elope,” they said.
Wedding insurance also covers the military. If the bride or groom is called to active duty and the wedding is canceled, you'll get all your deposits back.
What it doesn't cover: cold feet. If you change your mind"you're just out of luck.
